Becoming a dance exercise instructor, whether for Zumba or another popular program, can be a great way to lead a healthy lifestyle and make a good living at the same time. However, this type of career move is not for everyone and there are some important factors you should consider before taking the plunge.
- You Need to be Committed – Taking a couple of dance exercise classes a week, as a paying customer, can be great fun and is certainly not too physically demanding for most able-bodied people. On the other hand, taking several classes a day, as a qualified instructor, is a completely different story. If you are going to make it as a dancercise instructor, you will need to be 100% committed to your goal because it will be hard work at times.
- Previous Experience is Enormously Useful – Although the majority of courses for instructors have no formal entry requirements, it will obviously be much easier to progress and obtain your teaching certificate if you have previous experience of the program in question. In fact, it would be rather strange to commit to becoming an instructor for a program of which you had no prior knowledge, because you may as well find that it is not to your liking.
- Self-Motivation is Key – Virtually all licensed dancercise instructors, whether for Zumba or another program, work as independent contractors so there will be no one telling you to when or how often to work. While this sounds very attractive to those stuck in an office cubicle for 40 hours a week, it does mean that you need to be a self-starter.
In summary, you can make money, meet loads of interesting new people, and become very fit if you pursue a career as a dance fitness instructor, but do think about it carefully before making the final decision.
